Advice on 800m Training?
« on: March 02, 2010, 10:24:51 PM »
Hi everyone - I'm a D3 collegiate female track athlete entering my senior spring track season. I have been consistently posting 800m race times of 2:20 for most of my high school and college careers, and would like to PR before I graduate - I'm sick of being unable to cross that 2:20 barrier. Does anyone have advice on ways I can enhance my training in order to drop a few seconds? My typical week of training during the season is outlined below:

Monday: intervals (typically a ladder...something like 1200, 1000, 800, 600, 400, 200 at ~6 min. mile pace with 2 minute recoveries between each interval)

Tuesday: 6 mile run and lift

Wednesday: intervals (1000 repeats, or another ladder)

Thursday: 6 mile run and lift

Friday: short, easy run

Saturday: race

Sunday: easy 5 mile recovery run

Should I increase my mileage? Should I be doing extra cross training? Should I be doing plyos? What can I do to lose 3 seconds?

Thanks so much for your help!!

Well now. You seem to be lacking  some short intense stuff at 800m and 1500m pace.  Try workouts like 8 X 200m in :35 with a two minute rest and 8 X 400m in 1:15 with a 3 minute rest.   Does your school have a coach?  He should have been able to get you moving from 2:20 down to sub 2:10 in four years.
