Pre Marathon Training

I am considering doing my first marathon at the end of they year. If the target event is six months away and I just completed a long race this weekend...is the consensus that I should spend the next 6 to 8 weeks building my base and focusing on 10k training before transitioning to marathon training for the last 4 months?

Basically steady mileage and each week do a tempo, intervals (5k/10k/lactate threshold), a long run, and strides and hill charges for the next 6 to 8 weeks.
