200m/400m guy trying to run distance

by mcguck » Thu Nov 15, 2018 9:43 am

42yr old sprinter, I have been trying to run distance, I average around 50 miles a week. 5k pr is 18:18, half is 1:29:50, full is 3:40:10. I have been running since high school but didn't start training seriously till 4 years ago. I get told I need less mileage and harder workouts, I then get told I need more mileage. I am a high school coach with a part time job to supplement my salary, I have the time to run more the question is should I? I would like to BQ but wonder if chasing a marathon with my build is even worth it 5' 10" 160lbs lean.

This thread will give you a place to start.

Details about your sprinting career and why you want to run a marathon rather than say break 17 for 5k would help narrow down the training you should do.

Its a pride thing as I feel I will get no respect until I qualify for Boston. I feel no one cares about 5ks or Halfs, if I can't run a good marathon I must just suck. So its definitely in my head and something I need to just get over.

I believe you are probably more correct with needing to focus on running sub 18. My Sprint PR's are 23 in the 200 and 56 in the 400 ran last year with zero sprint training. I did get genetically tested and found to be primarily fast twitch and am in no way built to run fulls.

Does it matter what others think? ... Do the running you enjoy ... Race those distances you feel most competitive in ... & just be proud that you're out there doing your thing.
