Brilliant coaching by Tom

by kevinm » Sat Jul 13, 2013 5:03 pm

I would like to thank Tinman for putting together a great coaching plan to prepare me for USA T&F Masters Nationals. Because of over training on my part, I developed a hip flexor injury in late April and missed training for most of May. Tom put together a great training plan to fast track me back to shape and prepare me for the 1500 today. The workouts fit perfectly with my fitness level and had just the right amount of endurance mixed with speed work. I had no idea what to expect, since my mileage is low and I've become accustomed to running at a high level on higher mileage. Tom got me there with a different approach, and  I've learned more about Tinman training through this recent setback. Thanks Coach! FYI, I ran 4:24.15 and took 1st in the 50-54 division.

Splits were an even 71 for the for three laps, and 49.45 the last 300. I know the last 400 was 66 and change.

Friggin awesome race Kevin!  Kids, you can only haul ass like this if you are an endurance beast to start with.  Add a touch of speed and you can also hold off late-chargers over the last 30m.  A very well executed race. Congrats on the National Outdoor Championship.

Thanks, It sure gives you confidence knowing you have Tom in your corner. No matter what happens in the race, you know he has prepared you to be your best, with the given circumstances. I really didn't figure I would win, rather, I just wanted him to make me competitive and give me a shot with a lap to go. Sure enough, as Jim mentioned the endurance was there. I hadn't run 66 seconds for a 400 (or even close) since Indoor Nationals in the 800 meter race. And for me, this was not a tactical race, where you hold back, and then sprint the last 400. It was more, just run hard and even splits, and then let it loose the last 400 and see what happens!
