Re: Suggestions for XC Race weeks

Hello, I am a HS coach that is a follower of Tinman style training. Generally the rule of thumb that I follow is two workouts and a long run each week. If you have two races, then that is two workouts. In other words, two workouts on Tuesday and Thursday followed by a race on Saturday wouldn't reall...

Re: I need help peaking for districts and state (please!)

Can you clarify what your trying to qualify in and how close your are to qualifying times and/or which event you will think you will place high enough to qualify. The answer for peaking/tapering would vary depending on how easily or difficult you anticipate it for you to make state. For example, whe...

Re: TInman view on post race workouts?

I don't recall the exact thread, but I have seen Tinman recommend some post race work. For example a high school coach like myself might have one of my top runners complete a 2 mile tempo run with striders after running the 4x8 or a 1600 in a low-key meet.

runthe8,

What kind of volume and recoveries do you use for your AP 600 combo workouts? Congrats on your wonderful success indoors with your relays, btw! Thanks in advance!

Re: 5k-paced or VO2max workouts for longer distance racing

This is a bump from a this older thread. Based on Tinman's post above it can be concluded that some Vo2 Max work would be beneficial for very good 1500m runners. Is this true also for very good 800m runners?. What about Vo2 Max work for good to very good HS runners such as those who can run under 4:...

Re: Threshold Workouts for 1600m/3200m

Are we talking HS? I find that most of my guys and girls have trouble doing longer threshold runs with the exception of my most experienced and advanced juniors and seniors. I often break threshold/tempo work down in to smaller chunks such as mile repeats or segments of 5-10 min. Here are some examp...

Re: Tempo and Fartlek training for 3200m/1600m runners

As a high school coach of 800, 1600, and 3200 meter runners, below are some of our common workouts that we do during track. If we have zero meets in a week, we would feature one Stamina/Endurance Workout and one Hybrid Workout with a long run and short/medium runs between the workouts. Please note w...

Re: Late 5K race fatigue issues - High School Girl

My first guess is that her ferritin (iron reserves) are low. This is usually referred to as "low ferritin" or "sports anemia". You should take her to the doctor and get her levels checked. Usually you have to specifically ask for this test as most pediatricians see it as unnecessary. As a general ru...

Re: Walking the course

Hey coach, In our state there is an open practice time from 1:00-5:00 the Friday before the Saturday meet. During this time, there is also a mandatory coaches meeting. The local teams just drive to and from the course on Friday while the far-away teams (like us) drive down Friday morning and stay ov...

Re: Questions regarding jogging strollers...

I have a B.O.B. jogging stroller and its really nice. However, I do feel that it slows me down. I have only used it for easy runs, but would estimate a 30-45 sec slow down per mile at the same effort due to the resistance/weight of my baby (he's 3 mo as of now). What do you feel the effects are on y...

Re: The Running Summit (clinic) in Chicago: June 25th and 26

I was able to attend the clinic and really enjoyed it. Tinman was very enthusiastic and I learned more nuance and also confirmed a lot of what I am doing as a follower of the Tinman way. He did a great job of not lecturing dryly but injecting anecdotes and passion into his presentations that left th...

Re: Suggestions for workouts early in the season

Broch, I am fellow HS coach here. If you are looking to align yourself more to the Tinman way and the way of his followers, I'd suggest substituting a combo workout (CV + race pace) or a CV workout for the 200s/400s at mile pace. If you are like us and most other HS teams, I am sure you will have pl...

Re: CV training and speed work

brochford40, We use a lot of Tinman style stamina work in our training and do not really feature any stand alone hard sessions like a classic 10x400 at mile pace with short rest of any other hard aerobic work of that nature. One type of workout that you may want to consider are "combo" or "mixed rep...
