Re: 200m/400m guy trying to run distance

Its a pride thing as I feel I will get no respect until I qualify for Boston. I feel no one cares about 5ks or Halfs, if I can't run a good marathon I must just suck. So its definitely in my head and something I need to just get over. Does it matter what others think? ... Do the running you enjoy ....

Re: Alternative to all-moderate approach

You clearly have some talent. ... I think that you must accept that from time to time that the training required to get you to the level that you are at will from time to time cause injury ... some are more susceptible to injury than others. ... My advice is simple really ... stick to a training reg...

Re: George Gandy - Question for Tinman

It should be noted that Seb Coe's coach throughout his career was his dad Peter ... George did play an important part in Seb's development between the ages of 18 & 22 whilst he was at University (Loughborough) mainly in terms of Seb's weight training & general conditioning (through circuits, plyomet...

Given that Henrik's 16-year-old (!!!) brother (Jakob) has just won the European XC U20 title ... http://www.european-athletics.org/competitions/european-cross-country-championships/news/article=brother-gold-for-ingebrigsten/ ... any further details on his training approach would be of great interest.

Re: Late 5K race fatigue issues - High School Girl

Just another possibility to throw into the mix ... I had similar issues with a (Junior) HS boy last year ... He was on ADHD medication, & one of the tablets he took (once I did a little research) had the effect of preventing him drawing upon the last 10% of maximum heart-beat i.e. it imposed a sub m...

Re: How quickly can one improve?

Josh is quite correct ... no one knows where the journey will take you ... But the first step is for you to commit ... what you have been doing to date is derisory. Lydiard ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Lydiard ) said that the first step in getting fit was to run for an hour a day every day...

In total agreement with Shug ...

What you describe is training from the dark ages ...
NO serious elite distance/middle distance athlete would have a schedule like you describe. ...

Re: Article to read!

I think that it's very unlikely that a "smoking gun" will be found ... IF Salazar is actually encouraging his athletes to micro-dose on PEDs to stay within the WADA parameters, then no clear evidence of having "broken the rules" is likely to emerge ... I think it will come down to whether the athlet...

Re: Article to read!

I guess that the article & the TV programme confirm much of what many of us have suspected for quite a while. Here in the UK the Salazar story is significant as Mo Farah is probably our most visible athlete in terms of public perception. ... Moreover, our National Federation (British Athletics ... U...

Re: Lydiard's 50/50s

I believe the purpose of this session was to create a heavy localised (i.e. in the legs only) lactic response ... as opposed to a systemic response (the whole body) ... It would have a role in the final preparation of the athlete for competition ... Lydiard used the term "wind sprints" to describe t...

Re: Tinman 3000m cc training 12 year old advice

I agree totally with Tom & runthe8 ... The only thing I would add is that you could supplement his running training ... 3 times per week (?) ... with additional aerobic activity such as cycling &/or swimming ... & think long-term ... what he does @ age 16-18 is far more important than what he achiev...

Agreed! ...

So, we have another mantra ...

a) "Keep the ball rolling"
&
b) (If the plan is working) "stick to the plan"

Re: Alan Webb recommended workout...thoughts?

I am kind with Tom on this ... If running 1 Mile Repetitions with 1200m @ Threshold pace & the last 400m @ faster than Vo2Max pace ... I don't see much point in a short (30 seconds) recovery between the 1200m & 400m sections ... In a race you don't have any recovery, but practicing 'change' of pace ...

Re: Longer easy runs at “very” easy pace...

Basically ... * There's the "science" of coaching, where athletes often train to targets predetermined by vVo2 max / LT etc. etc. ... & * There's the "art" of coaching, where athletes tend to train to personal sensations of effort ... Coaches like Lydiard, Bideau, Tinman etc. are adept in the "art" ...
