Re: Van Aaken vs. Tinman

It was 70 degrees and humid.

I added 6 x 200 @ mile pace with 200 jogs afterward and they felt great.

Re: Van Aaken vs. Tinman

I hear you.  I was determined to slow down and stick with 200 jogging rests this week, and did so, but still ended up only managing 4 + 2, instead of 6 continuous.  Maybe that's OK since you were suggesting 4 or 5.

Re: Van Aaken vs. Tinman

It does seem like you and he have some ideas in common.  (Except the eating part, where VA is an extremist -- even advising runners to fast when training.) Your point about recovery is very interesting.  If the idea is to maximize running time at a given pace for the training stimulus, it would seem...

Van Aaken vs. Tinman

Van Aaken, from "Van Aaken Method": "A marathon runner can get along with two basic tempoo variations:   1. 1000-meter runs at marathon race pace, repeated 20-42 times, or 1000 meters at the pace of the runner's personal best 10,000 meter time, repeated 5-10 times, with long walking breaks.   2. Pre...

Re: why the short recoveries with CV reps?

I did an 8 x 1000 progression and felt the need for 400 recoveries in the latter half of the workout. Maybe the pace was a little too aggressive. Or maybe I am just spoiled by taking close to full recoveries. In any case it felt good and certainly did not obliterate me. An interesting alternative to...

Re: why the short recoveries with CV reps?

They are not stressful because he says do them 90 seconds slower than your best 2K time, which for me works out to about 20-30 seconds per mile slower than CV.

why the short recoveries with CV reps?

I understand 200m is standard for 1000s at CV pace.  In Tinman's interesting article about Interval Recoveries he advocates recovery times about equal to rep times for longer reps, which makes sense to me and seems to work well.  200m is a much shorter -- 90 secs at most. What is the reasoning behin...

Re: is it a mistake to do long runs at "moderate" pace?

What's the recovery on those CV intervals (1000s)?

Re: is it a mistake to do long runs at "moderate" pace?

not sure how to move this to the Coaching forum . . . PRs are 1:23/2:52 but I have usually run 2:55-2:58 off 70 MPW doing 3-4 miles speed on Wed, typically 800s around 6 min pace with long rest (600m), and 1-2 miles speed on Fr, like 6-12 x 1 min on, 1-2 mins off.  Might try higher volume, slower in...

2 -- Wed and Fr.  Usually longer intervals on Wed and shorter on Fr.

is it a mistake to do long runs at "moderate" pace?

I only recently became acquainted with Tinman's charts and noticed that my Sunday long runs in marathon training correspond pretty closely with what he calls "moderate" pace, quite a bit faster than "easy" pace.  The following day is always a recovery day at a pace that is often slower than his "ver...
