Re: Tinman, care to report on how the Tinman Elite are doing

Also, Tinman, I know Drew has ran 3:56.79 for a full mile. Your calculator predicts he could run a 13:24 for 5k with that mile time. Do you think he can or is his stamina lacking? If he runs 13:20, that's massive improvement.

Re: 800m training

I would agree that too much LT training doesn't agree with athletes who are more skewed to the shorter events. And usually, these athletes hate tempo runs or LT runs, in my experience. My runners who are more 800 oriented prefer CV or Aerobic Power (from Tom's calculator) based stamina work, and I ...

800m training

What does everyone feel about 800m training? I read guys like Steve Magness or others who say that too much lactate threshold work is bad for guys who are rely heavily on fast twitch fibers (400m/800m types). How do you all feel about training these speed racers for the 800m? Should they be doing we...

Adjusting paces

Hi! I am going to be training athletes through the summer who have lots of room for improvement with consistency and stamina training. They will be running strong in the fall cross country season. Since they have so much room for improvement, it's safe to assume that over the course of the next 3-5 ...

Re: Tinman opinions on Andy Powell approach

I saw a few NXN Coaching Clinic videos from Powell a few years back. He seems to take a Daniels approach to training. That would make since because Vin Lananna was once Andy Powell's coach at Stanford and we know that Vin is a Daniels proponent. If Andy Powell's training is as closely related to Vin...

Re: Drew lowers his own national high school indoor mile 3:5

That was exciting. I hope that Drew's transition to Oregon is smooth. Does Andy Powell do much more anaerobic work? Sometimes when something is working, changing it drastically isn't always the best option. I hope for the best. Drew is getting in great training. He has such a great future ahead of h...

Re: Periodized or consistent training

I know that many HS coaches in the past and still many now prescribe anaerobic sessions to make their runners "fast." It will work for a while until they are too banged up, lose their endurance because they've had to cut overall mileage and just feel generally crummy from the hard sessions (neurolo...

Re: Periodized or consistent training

The more I learn about the sport, about the impact of training on my own racing and reading what others have done (with success or failure), the more I am convinced that sharp periodization zones and acute peaking are not an optimal way to train. Often on certain message boards you will hear about ...

Re: Periodized or consistent training

I think your impression is correct but I think we need to know more to decide on a particular case. How old are you? Roughly how good are you? Maybe most important, how much other stress do you have in your life and does it cluster in particular parts of the year? For example, through most of my 40...

Periodized or consistent training

What do you guys think about traditional periodized training? The impression I get from the forum is a lot of people keep roughly the same training year round but include more race specific training tacked on after CV intervals as they get closer to their bigger races. Is this correct? I'm trying to...
