Re: question for Tinman: tempo runs for half marathon: pre-peak

Can you comment on how to improve "stride strength"? I don't know if that's best done here or in a separate, dedicated thread. But it seems to be what usually lets me down. I do hills and lunges--any other suggestions?

Re: Muscle versus air

Probably bad manners to bump my own thread, but I've got to think this could be relevant to other runners. I'll try to focus the question a little better: supposing you've determined that your main deficiency is not aerobic/metabolic, but rather muscular strength and endurance. How would your traini...

Re: Muscle versus air

Well, the marathon isn't my main concern and by itself wouldn't be good evidence: it's a very hilly one, and my training was on the light side because I was being cautious after a long-healing knee injury. But to answer your questions (without my training log in front of me)... -maybe something like...

Muscle versus air

I'm curious whether different runners have different combinations of muscular challenges versus breathing/chemical challenges. For example, I always tend to get more sore and stay sore longer than runners of equal performance level. Also quite injury-prone. On my first (and only) marathon, my limiti...

Circuit Training

Wow--this thread just keeps on giving. Thanks, everyone! Those of you who have direct experience (either as athletes or coaches, or both) with this kind of work: I'm curious what sorts of subtle things you noticed. Maybe it helped certain types of runners but not others. Maybe you noticed you could ...

Circuit Training

Thanks, OldXC and Tinman! Sounds like I'm getting some good possibilities here. Tinman, is the Gandy routine similar to what you did the year you ran your best times? Anyone: Let's say during your base you do CV reps or aerobic fartlek on Monday, a long run on Wednesday, and either a tempo run or Ti...

Circuit Training

Thanks, everyone, for all the ideas! The outdoor thing sounds like fun and I'll try it this summer, but meanwhile winter's coming and I think I'll have to do my exercises indoors. I've been doing the Running Times routines (Jay Johnson, right?) but, frankly, am starting to feel a little bored with t...

Circuit Training

Could any of you outline a basic routine of circuit training? Several posters, including Tinman, have said it's useful, but I don't have enough background knowledge to use it sensibly. I'm interested in a few basic questions like: -which exercises, and how to do them? -how to integrate a circuit rou...
