CV length question

Tinman, I see that you typically want CV workouts to be in the form of 5-6x1000m. What would the benefits, if any, be for doing longer CV workouts (i.e. 3-4x2000m). Would this type workout be more beneficial to a marathoner, whereas the former be more geared for a 5k-10k runner?
