Re: Insertional Achilles Tendinitis - Help Please

At age 45, I am now a believer in cross training (cycling) to help with the muscle imbalances.  About 1 year ago, I suffered from achilles issues and while some of the pain was remedied by eccentric heel drops and an insert in my shoes, I am not sure if they were the "cure all."  I wear Nike shoes a...

Testosterone Therapy

For the past few years, I have had my testosterone levels check.  Each time, I have been at the low end of normal (280-1070 ng/dL being normal).  My level was 306.  My doctor didn't want to treat; however, the clinics that have seemingly popped up everywhere will treat me at my current level.  My sy...

Re: Cycling Training, Racing, Physiology, and Racing Tactics

I actually "made it through" a marathon in February of this year.  I'd say that I was about 75% and ran 3:17 (about 15 min of of PR).  Following that I took it easy.  I have a friend who is a Sports Medicine doctor and I had PRP injection in left hamstring 3.5 weeks ago, so I've just been cycling ea...

Re: Cycling Training, Racing, Physiology, and Racing Tactics

Thanks, Tinman.  I resume running on Monday and I will see what schedule fits for me.

Re: Cycling Training, Racing, Physiology, and Racing Tactics

Tinman, I purchased a road bike at the end of last year and have recently started riding some.  I have an extensive running background and do understand that more running typically produces a better runner.  In my case, I bought the bike to help/cross train when I can't run.  I'm 45 now and battling...

Re: Stride cadence

Tinman, you wrote, "Can you balance your body more forward on your foot? If so, you'll run faster."  What exactly do you mean by this?  I've experimented with leaning slightly more forward at the waist when I run and I naturally speed up.  Is this what is meant?

Re: Kids

I recall posting about this same topic some time ago.  I coached my daughter and other kids from the ages of 7 up to 11.  My daughter is now 11 and we recently started a middle school XC team.  Others may have other opinions, but I was always told to keep it fun for the kids.  If you kill them with ...

Re: Insertional Achilles Tendinitis

I typically don't chime in much, but this is an instance where I have some experience.  I dealt with upper hamstring tendinopathy for approximately 18 months (finally diagnosed with MRI).  Currently, I would say that I'm about 90%.  What helped?  I second Tom about not stretchhing, initially.  NSAID...

Re: eBook ideas

Having two small children, I'd also like to hear something about when/how to introduce kids to running.  Other topics within this area:  running "games" to keep their interest, when to introduce speedwork, how much mileage, when to really push them. I was at a crossroads several years ago when my da...

Re: Cycling

Thanks for the post.  I am about to be 45 years old and over the past 1.5 years, I have experienced upper hamstring tendinopathy.  I intend to enjoy the cycling and not take it too seriously, but I would hope that it would help with some known muscle imbalances.

Cycling

I am a long time reader of this forum and have been running for 10+ years.  I recently purchased a road bike as a hobby; however, was wondering of any benefits/drawbacks that it may have on my running.  I intend to continue with my same running mileage and workouts and anticipate riding 3x a week, b...

Ryan Hall

As there has been much discussion about Ryan Hall not starting a number of marathons, dropping out of one, etc., I was wondering Tinman would do with such an athlete.  I recently read an article where former "greats" provided advice to Ryan Hall.  I was curious as to how Tinman and some of the other...

Re: Supplements

DK, I had read in another thread that Tinman suggested olive oil before a long run.  My wife just purchased a small tub of coconut oil, but it is not in liquid form.  How is this taken and how much?  What is the benefit of either oil?

Thanks again for the responses.

Supplements

I have followed much of Tinman's training for many years.  As I am a masters runner, I am always looking for little "advantages" here and there to help me keep up with my younger competitors.  No PEDS or anything, but rather supplements.  I currently take a multivitamin, but have recently read much ...

Multiple Marathon Question

I am set to be a pacer at my hometown marathon in early December.  I am the 3:30 pacer, which should be comfortable for me.  I had planned to do this marathon as a training run, but registration filled up and my only chance to run it was as a pacer.  My goal marathon is approximately two months late...
