Re: Dathan Ritzenheim's half-marathon in Philly

Ritz has worked so hard for a long time, I really hope he can get a really great marathon time and PR under his belt. I think it would really help his confidence from that point on and into subsequent races, as it would likely do for most of us. To have seen such a great breakthrough for him in 2009...

Re: Progress Report

Great idea and excuse for me to eat some chocolate PopTarts, ha! I've been staying away from coffee pre-run on the Sat long runs and overall in general. But I do like the awakening effect on the nervous system. Food-wise I actually do try to stay away for the most part as I want my body to try and t...

Re: Progress Report

Today I was able to get in a pretty good morning workout. I had recently been getting in workouts on Mon/Thur but in the evenings and a Long Run on Sat morning. Im moving back to Big Workouts on Tue or Wed and Sat. Anyways I went back to looking at some old training logs and even when I was having g...

Re: Ritz's recent training

I was actually thinking as well that the recent 10K work would be of benefit as I know you typically prescribe it/CV pace in the buildup. And that's what I'm hoping, that it helps him. I really would like to see a breakthrough for him even if here later in his career.

Ritz's recent training

http://dathanritzenhein.competitor.com/ I was just reading his blog and interested in part by some of what he stated. "To get the most out of this short nine weeks I have had to really focus on hitting the workouts and extra long runs. One thing I had not done much in previous marathon training cycl...

Re: Progress Report

Again, I am right there with you in regards to the morning stuff. I think that if I can consistently (I was doing this well for about 3 weeks, but then fell off again 3 weeks ago) in getting in at least an easy 3 miles the morning before an evening workout. Before that, this summer, I simply wasn't ...

Re: Progress Report

That is outstanding!!! I'd like to know what's worked for you regarding morning workouts. It is difficult for me as well and if I'm not getting in at least 1, or even better 2, morning runs besides my early Saturday run I struggle big time come Saturday. I mean I can put in a 12 mile run some Saturd...

I can't address whether it is a remedy for your situation. But I'm 99% certain that Tinman meant Strassburg sock.

Re: Galen Rupp at the Trials

I think people would be surprised by how many elites are integrating strength training into their programs at some point. I do a lot of reading just out of personal interest and it seems that it runs the gamut from well thought out planning to just random tinkering. Obviously one can jump back to Se...

Centrowitz, injury & cross-training before the Trials

http://www.oregonlive.com/trackandfield/index.ssf/2012/07/oregon_track_field_rundown_mat_2.html Interesting article. Cross-training can be a beatdown sometimes, but this seems to certainly show the benefits when looking to maintain and bridge fitness.  I'd be curious to know if "churn three miles up...

Re: Supercompensation on weekends

Tom, thanks for the story above. The real-world examples that you pass on are always appreciated and valued highly. Always great to see different methods for training and thriving when life doesn't always allow for an "optimal" schedule.

Re: Supercompensation on weekends

In addition to a good whey protein (I like Jarrow Formulas or Designer Whey) One supplement that has been greatness for me is L-glutamine. I get Jarrow Formulas brand in powder form. It is the most abundant amino acid in skeletal tissue and your gut. I would not skimp on brand quality either. But th...

Re: Supercompensation on weekends

Here's an outline of how ATimmins was training.  So, very similar in terms of overall volume. You refered to it as not being "optimal" but for a person working during the week actually it might optimal as you are likely less stressed to get the training in, have more time available to recover over S...

Re: Galen Rupp at the Trials

http://www.therunzone.com/http://www.therunzone.com//viewtopic.php?p=3955#p3955 I think somewhere Tom has described the extra 8miler after the race as moderate (don't know pace, etc.) but perhaps some good time even at an easy Tempo pace might be doable if you feel up to it. Obviously I'm waiting to...
