The Run Zone Challenge

Post by Tinman » Wed Apr 22, 2015 5:45 pm

I am interested in gathering some data from a variety of runners. I would like to gather a time from the 1600m and the 400m and match it to the 5000m. So, if for example you have run a recent 5,000m (5 km) race, please take up the challenge and run a 1600m and a 400m in the same week and share your results here. Note, it does not matter if you are a "slow" runner. I care that you just give your best effort and the data will be used to verify a formula that I have created. Note, that if you want to keep your information out of the public eye, I understand, so just send it to my email address: runfastcoach@gmail.com

I think this could be the start of something interesting: a challenge each month on The Run Zone.

Here is an example:

Jeff N. ran 19:00 in a 5 km road race two weeks ago. He takes up the challenge and runs a 1600m and runs 5:40 and two days later runs 74 seconds over 400 meters. He shares the data with The Run Zone or directly to Tinman at runfastcoach@gmail.com.

Note, I am glad to have even more data. If you ran in an event that lasted less than an hour, please share that with me/us let know that too.

By the way, I have a bunch of ideas for challenges on The Run Zone; some are to collect data, and some are simply for seeing how runners respond. For example, I'd like to challenge runners to a 6 x 800m workout next month. Jog 2 minutes between reps. We can match up workouts with times achieved in races. It will be interesting to see how the group does, and we can derive a mathematical correlation between workout results and race results.

Take care,

Tinman

Looks like I need to race a 5K as believe it or not, I have never raced one.

I'll be happy to do this for you, once I regain some of my running fitness!

My daughter recently ran an 18:07 5K, a 5:09 1600 and a 64 second 400 in a 4X400 relay. Hope this helps your research! The mile and the 400 were within a week of each other. The 5K time was about 3 weeks before.

My female runner mirrors the one above. 18:12, 5:08, 63.7 relay split.

Male runner 15:23, 4:25, 57.2 relay split. I will say I believe his relay split was very poorly run and he was toast at 250 to go.

Great site and appreciate everyone's contribution especially your work Tinman.
