Time Trial before race.

Post by BURN7 » Wed Jul 15, 2015 10:19 am

I know Tinman prescribes a time trial a few days before a big race and I read that Nick Willis did an 800 in 1:46 at practice 3 days before Monaco. An effort like that would worry me especially with low mileage HS kids but it is a great sharpening tool. Any input Tinman?

Coach Burns -

In my opinion, Nick's coach is spot-on with the assignment of a time-trial for yesterday. Historically, I've prescribed an 800m time-trials three to four days before peak races on many occasions. It works great! A runner doesn't even need to run at 100% effort to gain a boost in power and fluidity on race-day.

Well, apparently it worked out pretty well for him! 3:29...new New Zealand 1500 record.

That was an amazing race. Congrats to Nick. And to Kiprop.
