BQ race needed before Sept

Post by nancyd » Tue Apr 26, 2011 1:47 pm

I have a friend who tried to BQ at Boston, but just didn't have a good day.  So now, he has to BQ between now and Sept 12th.  Any opinions on good races?
He's thinking about a race in Portland Oregon on July 4, or a race in Salt Lake City July 25th.
The SLC race seems a little too much down hill, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks,
Nancy

Summer is very slim pickin's for marathons, as you have probably gathered.  Of the very few good races out there, some are at altitude.

SLC is very downhill (good thing for some people; not so good for others).

I've heard good things about Pocotello, Idaho (9/3).  Not the easiest place to get to, but seems like a good race.

There's Grandmas in Duluth, MN. There's a marathon in Greenbay, WI on May 14/15th.  Both of these are far enough north where it shouldn't be too warm.

You can also check out mychicagoathlete.com for race listings:

Grandma's is popular, but it's a bit expensive (hotels, too) , and recently it's been pretty warm (68 degrees at the start in 2009, I think). In my opinion, it is too late, even for northern MN.
If your friend is ready to run again soon, Fargo (May 21) might be a good one - it's very flat, I have heard. It's a huge race.
I'll be doing the Lake Wobegon Trail marathon May 14, and it's supposed to be flat and fast. Only 350 runners, so a different experience than Fargo.

Nrun is right about Grandma's.  Has the potential to be a great race in any given year but you can also bake.  If you aren't local, lodging and travel can be rather pricey and the convenient spots are taken by now.  As other smaller races have emerged, it seems to have gotten less popular (usually it would be sold out by this time).

Green Bay is full.  Great race (endorsed by Tinman as well) and I would have gone there myself, but had to change plans due to a scheduling conflict.

Fargo has a great reputation (another race that I have personally considered in the past) but is not easy to get to if you aren't in the midwest.
