National Masters 5km road race in Syracuse, New York today!

Post by Tinman » Sun Oct 02, 2011 9:39 pm

Congratulations to Ron Kochanowicz, who placed 15th in 16:32 and Andrew Duncan, who placed 3rd in 15:33. Ron told me it was raining hard and the consensus was the times were slowed by 15-20 seconds. The winner was 15:28 (I'll guess it was Charlie Kern, who is a beast, but I don't know for sure, yet).  Ron turned 40 this year, and he's on a roll with the training I've given him as he new coach, since July. Andrew, of course has been coached by me since 2004. He's getting faster, even though he's aging. He's 44.

Anyway, we have many masters runners on this site, and I thought it would be nice to know that some of your community members competed at the national's race and did well.

Tom, thanks for the update. I would say Andrew deserves the "beast" label too!
Glad to hear Ron is back on track too, have loved reading his past training logs and contributions as he also seemed like he also approaches his training in a well thought and smart manner

TexNav -

That's Ron K, whom I coach, that raced; not Ron Dorfeld, who is The Run Zone originator and administrator. Ron D. is struggling with injuries and his running is not going as he hoped it would.

Oh ok, gotcha. I knew Ron D. had been off from running a while back but was thinking he'd started training again a few months ago (still enjoy going back to see how he trains, never see anything over the top.

Thanks, Tinman. It's inspiring to hear about the success of these masters runners. And, it's pretty cool they're being trained by you!!

Hi All,
Yes... A cold and rainy morning in Syracuse, but the racing was good.  It was awesome racing against so many fast 'old' guys.

I ran 16:50 on Labor day and to have manage a 16:32 a month later under these conditions was really nice.  It was a lifetime road 5K pr - Never ran the 5K on the roads back in the day.

Coach Tom has been so good to me and I enjoy having him as my coach.

I race the Des Moines Half Marathon in two weeks.

Thanks Tom!

Thanks Ron!

Here are the results (they rounded up the times to the next second):

Andrew beat two guys who ran sub-15 minutes for 5,000m on the track this summer. Cool!

Some impressive performances in those older age groups too!

Top 3 in 60-64.....17:32, 17:55, 17:58.  20:02 was 14th place in this age group.

19:04 wins 65-69; and it took 19:37 to make top 3.

16 runners age 60 and older broke 20 minutes.

5 starters in the 80-84....meaning just showing up was not enough to get top 3.

2 starters in 90-94...usually just showing up is good for first place!

I checked out Andrew's race but didn't look into the others, very impressive times all-around.

Ron K. you should chime in more often, great race too!

(You know I also just realized I was probably half asleep when I looked at the initial post last night as I didn't even pay attention that Tom has posted your last name and led to my confusion).

Excellent job for both Andrew and Ron.
At this point I can only wish that I was competing at national events.
I am however getting my first series of Ultrasound Guided Gelatin (Hyaluronic Acid) Injections into the affected knee joint next Tuesday. I still remain hopeful that I will get back to a full regiment of training very SOON.

I'm glad to hear that Andrew continues to train, and race at such a high level.

Thanks Tex and Ron.
After Worlds in mid July 2011 Tom pulled me out of a 1500m tail spin.  I'm so glad Andrew D told me to give him a shout.
Right now, Tom and I are working on increasing my stamina and strength.  I look forward to a very successful 2011-2012 indoor and outdoor season as my main focus is the mile/1500m.
Best Regards and I'll chime in often.
Ron
